Former Australian leader Paul Keating once famously said, "If you're not in Sydney, you're camping out." And with Bondi being the very beating heart of Sydney, there will be no other place to be this weekend.
Not only is the Boost Mobile Surf Sho on, featuring Jordy, Kelly, TB, Owen, and 'The Champ'; but Kelly Slater will also be joining the crew from World Surfing Reserves (WSR) in announcing the world's newest surfing reserve.
With Malibu and Waikiki recently designated, Australia will now also have it's own international reserve, to be revealed on Saturday at Bondi Icebergs.
According to Brad Farmer, chairman of National Surfing Reserves, a partner with WSR: "In Australia, surfing has become a way of life for millions - it's emblematic of our national cultural identity."
"The dedication of each WSR seeks the protection of this coastal zone of waves and habitat from wanton destruction and exploitation - through no other mechanism but the positive force of appreciation and valuation."
So, with over 10000 beaches in Australia, the interesting thing now is which truly iconic wave zone will it be? When it comes to international cultural and historical locations, Australia has them in spades; Noosa, Kirra, Burleigh, Byron, North Narrabeen, Manly, Lennox, Margaret River, even Bondi itself.
Stay tuned. And in the meantime check surfingreserves.org.
